Sara Mitra: Session Vocalist

In addition to her live performances, Sara is much in demand as an adept session singer with strong sight-reading ability, wide improvisatory skills and an excellent musical memory. She received her music training through intensive choral singing with some of the UK’s finest choirs (Cantate Youth Choir, Joyful Company of Singers, Laudate, Sweelinck Singers). Sara read Music at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, where she held a Choral Scholarship for three years, also singing with the University Chamber Choir and studying classical vocal technique with Nigel Wickens. Active in the University Opera Society, she played the title role in the premier of the modern adaptation of Galuppi’s ‘The She Devil’ at the ADC Theatre. Other highlights include an acclaimed Mad Margaret in Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera ‘Ruddigore’, at the Minack Theatre, Cornwall, and singing Monteverdi during evening mass in the Basilica San Marco, Venice. Memorably, aged seventeen Sara featured as the singing voice of Cinderella in the BBC Christmas Pantomime, composed by Howard Goodall and broadcast by Radio 4 on Christmas Day to millions of listeners.

The versatility required for successful choral singing has given Sara a variety of vocal styles to call on (soul, jazz, blues, classical, light opera) and the ability to sight-sing French, German, Italian and Latin texts. She has recorded choral sessions for TV and radio at various large London studios (such as Phoenix Sound and Abbey Road) as well as solo vocals for individual production companies such as Soundtree Music, Northstar Productions and Silverscore Productions. Her distinctive solo work includes main vocals on ‘Ladyhop’ Maltesers TV and cinema commercials, and lead vocals for Comic Relief’s Fairtrade educational video project. Choral sessions include contributions to The Hitch-hikers Guide to The Galaxy film soundtrack, and Spectrasonics Symphony of Voices, a library of musical sounds for professional filmmakers.

I was very impressed by your musicality. You’re first on call for any vocal recording.” Jim Treweek, SMARTassMusic Services
