Vocal Coaching and Music Theory
Sara Mitra is available to teach singing and music theory
on an individual or group basis.
Sara read Music at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, where she held
a Choral Scholarship, also singing with the Cambridge University Chamber
Choir (C.U.C.O) and studying classical vocal technique with Nigel
Wickens.
As Assistant Director of Music at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge,
Sara taught A-levels in Music and Performance Studies, directed the
80-member College Choir in performances at West Road Concert Hall
and St John’s Chapel, Cambridge, and coached chamber groups
for staged productions at The Robinson Theatre.
Sara has created vocal arrangements and compositions for a number
of ensembles, including music for the award-winning student performance
of Dario Fo’s “Devil in Drag” at The National Theatre.
She particularly enjoys writing for a cappella voices, and has amassed
a collection of high voice (SSA and SSAA) arrangements of jazz, gospel
and pop songs. These were created for the Lane Academy Choir, Ely.
Singing Sara’s arrangements, they were prizewinners at the Cambridge
Music and Drama Festival, 2004 and 2006.
In addition to individual tuition, Sara has given masterclasses in
jazz singing for Cantate Youth Choir (Jazzworks 2007), Viljandi Culture
Academy and the Tallinn English College (Estonia Tour 2007), and co-led
workshops on voice / drumkit interaction with her husband, award-winning
jazz drummer Tim Giles.
Sara currently teaches singing at The
Institute, an adult education college based in North London, and
music theory at St Paul’s Cathedral School, London.
