Vocal Coaching and Music Theory

Sara Mitra is available to teach singing and music theory on an individual or group basis.

Sara read Music at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, where she held a Choral Scholarship, also singing with the Cambridge University Chamber Choir (C.U.C.O) and studying classical vocal technique with Nigel Wickens.

As Assistant Director of Music at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, Sara taught A-levels in Music and Performance Studies, directed the 80-member College Choir in performances at West Road Concert Hall and St John’s Chapel, Cambridge, and coached chamber groups for staged productions at The Robinson Theatre.

Sara has created vocal arrangements and compositions for a number of ensembles, including music for the award-winning student performance of Dario Fo’s “Devil in Drag” at The National Theatre. She particularly enjoys writing for a cappella voices, and has amassed a collection of high voice (SSA and SSAA) arrangements of jazz, gospel and pop songs. These were created for the Lane Academy Choir, Ely. Singing Sara’s arrangements, they were prizewinners at the Cambridge Music and Drama Festival, 2004 and 2006.

In addition to individual tuition, Sara has given masterclasses in jazz singing for Cantate Youth Choir (Jazzworks 2007), Viljandi Culture Academy and the Tallinn English College (Estonia Tour 2007), and co-led workshops on voice / drumkit interaction with her husband, award-winning jazz drummer Tim Giles.

Sara currently teaches singing at The Institute, an adult education college based in North London, and music theory at St Paul’s Cathedral School, London.
